Lisa Wright has one of the most beautiful and strongest voices in UK country music which should not go unnoticed. Her natural, rich tone sets the bar pretty high and challenges even some of todays biggest names.
Lisa is about to release her latest EP Mind Of Mine on May 25th but has already released the track Tennessee and if this song is anything to go by then her EP is going to be sensational. Tennessee is a gorgeous track that has a wonderful steady flow about it which is really quite captivating. The track is mid tempo with a strong Nashville sound which of course is rather fitting with the tracks title and premise. The mid tempo melody is also slightly downhearted which makes the slight pessimistic lyrics speak volumes as they are likely relatable to a large amount of artists.
Lisa’s writing is a prime example of, if artists were happy all the time, what would they have to write about? A bad day can bring the most positive spin and in this case, it brought the stunning song Tennessee.
We asked Lisa to share the story behind the track which we found very interesting and hope you do too.

Song: Tennessee
Tennessee is a song about expectations vs reality.
I found myself in Nashville at the end of 2017, and I was so excited to be there. I love everything about the city. The people; the atmosphere and, of course, the music…
It just so happens that at that time in my life, I was going through a bit of a tricky time and I felt like I couldn’t quite enjoy the experience as I had hoped, or expected! I remember saying to myself: “just go out and get inspired” and so I walked into a bar to go and hear some live music and sitting down, looking around and expecting to feel all inspired and wonderful and instead… felt isolated and just plain awkward. Ha.
I knew nobody there. They didn’t know me. I just sat by myself. Usually, situations like that feel liberating but at that moment, it felt a little… off.
I wrote the first verse on the spot.
Anyway, I flew home a few days later and told Kaity Rae about that moment and sung her the first verse and shortly after, Tennessee, was written.
LYRICS:
Sitting in a bar,
Nobody knows my name.
Why should they care?
I mean, it ain’t like I’m the reason they came!
So I’m ordering myself a beer
Wondering what I’m doing here.
They said this town would be the making of me…
But, Tennessee,
Has got me hurtin’ like a ring of fire
Makes me think I should just get a 9-5,
Oh no, said I’d give it a go.
But I aint all I thought I’d be in Tennessee.
My mother and my father
Just don’t understand
Why being here don’t make me
Happier than I am.
Truth is I’m blinded by
The promise in the neon lights
Lost myself chasing something I can’t find.
Tennessee,
Has got me hurtin’ like a ring of fire
Makes me think I should just get a 9-5,
Oh no, said I’d give it a go.
Up and down like a rollercoaster
Every time I think that I am getting close
Oh, no.
Just caught in between
I ain’t all I thought I’d be in Tennessee.
Tennessee,
Has got me hurtin’ like a ring of fire
Where baring your soul is just a 9-5
Oh, no.
Still I gave it a go.
Up and down like a rollercoaster
Everytime I think that I am getting close
Oh, no.
Just caught in between
I ain’t all I thought I’d be
But maybe, you’re just not for me.
Tennessee.
