William The Conqueror’s album, ‘Maverick Thinker’ is out now via Chrysalis Records.
From the first jangling grunge guitar of Move On which smacks you between the eyes,to the gentle end of the title track, this album is a cracker. True to form this South-West trio delivers. Whether in the studio or on the road this is one hellova band.
Recorded in the spring of 2020 at Sound City in L.A. where they signed a new contract with Chrysalis Records. The album recording was delayed a couple of weeks as Bob Dylan overran his scheduled time in the same studio for his Rough and Rowdy Ways album.
There is a great spontaneity in the music of William The Conqueror. Maverick Thinker was done in one take. It’s refreshing how many of the songs on the album end rather than fade out. It’s as if it’s live in the studio – and you feel like it’s a gig. And this is one of the best live bands around.
This is a record of power and groove, in a grunge Americana rock’n’roll wrapper and the trademark William The Conqueror wall of sound, a touch heavier than the previous two albums. Fronted by Ruarri Joseph, a languid storyteller, these are great tunes. Naomi Holmes and Harry Harding provide the engine-room which propels the band to constant highs.
Fans of William The Conqueror will probably have already bought this album, and the slate grey disc is available from independent record stores. This is the only album this reviewer has ever had on pre-order. It certainly did not disappoint.
William The Conqueror are itching to get this record out on the road and will bring it to life with an Autumn UK tour. Don’t miss out, on the album or the tour.
