Katy Hurt – See Ya Later – Single Review and Story Behind the Song

Katy Hurt has been making her mark within the UK country music scene for a number of years now. With a large following, constant busy touring schedule that includes some of the UK’s biggest festivals (C2C, Black Deer) a successful pledge campaign for her up and coming EP (Unfinished Business) that was recorded in Winnipeg, Canada, Katy has today released the first single from the EP titled See Ya Later.

Having lived in the US for a portion of her childhood, it is easy to hear the influences of the American Country sound within her music, however, Katy hasn’t attempted to adopt the US country lifestyle in her lyrics but has simply blended the US and UK country pop sounds together, catering for both sides of the Atlantic.

Sonically, See Ya Later has a fresh, up beat and fun, bouncy melody with a strong country pop style to it. Katy’s voice has a nice youthful tone which is quite inviting but at the same time (In this song) has a sassy “you don’t fool me” attitude way about it, especially in the “So see ya later, see ya later” part of the chorus which is edgy and fun to sing a long to and makes you feel uplifted and confident.

Katy is relatable in this song and you feel connected with her words and the way she sings them –  it’s as if she is sitting with her friends, sharing the tale of a terrible night out and you want to be a part of her circle.

A very current sound, this song could easily fit within the US country music market and wouldn’t be out of place on country radio – if only they would play more women in country on the US radio stations hey?

See Ya Later – written by Katy Hurt her guitarist Gab Zsapka speaks of persistent men who promise the world but you know that it is all talk and that they won’t deliver.

Katy kindly shares the story behind the song with us;

Gab and I were messing around with puns about a street name and realised that “I’ll See Ya Later” would be a good title for a song. We started working on the track and had a couple of sessions on it but couldn’t quite settle on a direction. Then on a night out with a friend of mine, I watch a guy hit on several girls and then we he attempted to hit on my friend she immediately shut him down. I remember thinking that it was such a powerful moment and realised that “See Ya Later” would work really well with that story so Gab and I decided to focus on that and hone in on that topic!”

Lyrics

Mr Persistent
Keep your distance
You must think I was born last week
Think you’re pretty cool
Irresistible
It takes more to sweep me off my feet
Oh Mr Mr
You never listen
You’re just waiting for your turn to speak
I’ve seen how you act
That’s the reason that
We ain’t never ever gonna meet
Up for coffee when you ask me for the third time
Ain’t even started but I’m leaving saying goodbye
Baby oh baby there’s no maybes

I know you won’t give me your world
I’m not that different from the other girls
So Don’t even think about chasing me (about chasing me)
I’ve heard those lines before
It sounds like the devil knocking on my door
And you don’t get my love for free
So
See Ya
See Ya Later
See Ya Later Now
I’ll see ya
See ya later
See ya later

Now You’re insistent
That you’re committed
To do what it takes to win my hand
But you’ll let it go
As soon as you know
That I’m calling you my man
I’ve been there before picking up the pieces
For my friends who let themselves believe those
Baby’s but oh baby theres no maybes’

I know you wont give me your world
I’m not that different from the other girls
So don’t even think about chasing me (About chasing me)
I’ve heard those lines before
It Sounds like the devil knocking on my door
And You don’t get my love for free
So
See Ya
See Ya Later
See Ya Later Now
I’ll See Ya
See Ya Later
See Ya Later Now
I’ll See Ya
See Ya Later
See Ya Later Now
See Ya
See Ya Later
See Ya Later

Now oh oh ooh
You made a play for but you’re not the one for me
Now oh oh oooh
Baby, oh baby there’s no maybes
Yeah baby, oh baby, there’s no maybe’s

I know you won’t give me your world
I’m not that different from the other girls
So Don’t even think about chasing me (about chasing me)
I’ve heard those lines before
It Sounds like the devil knocking on my door
And You don’t get my love for free
So
See Ya
See Ya Later
See Ya Later Now
I’ll See Ya
See Ya Later
See Ya Later Now
See Ya
See Ya Later
See Ya Later Now
I’ll See Ya
See Ya Later
See Ya Later
