Scotty McCreery is one of very few contestants on American Idol who I remember alongside fellow country artists Lauren Alaina, Kellie Pickler and of course Carrie Underwood. He was for me and many others a shoe in to be a finalist. The one thing I remember the most about Scotty was the constant comparisons to Josh Turner who I adore. However, I think it is safe to say that Scotty has broken away from that labelling now and has proven over and over again that he is his own person, has his own voice, he is an individual artist with his own artistic stylings.
Comparisons will always be there, they are for most artists but Scotty has a lot to offer, he has come so far since Idol. I haven’t followed his career massively, not out of lack of interest but purely because I shamefully just hadn’t got around to it yet. It’s changing now though, especially since his name is popping up everywhere and I can’t miss it- that’s a great thing, that means others like me and people who never knew him will now get to know his music. It’s wonderful to see him and Lauren from the Idol 2011 Alumni kick butt all over country music this year.
Five More Minutes was released May 5 and it catapulted to No. 2 on iTunes and already has nearly 1.5 million streams at Spotify and won the Rare Country Opry Moment of the Year Award for a live performance video on the Grand Ole Opry’s YouTube channel that has received more than 2.8 million views.
Five More Minutes was written by McCreery with Frank Rogers and Monty Criswell just a couple of weeks after the passing of Scotty’s grandfather who was the inspiration behind the song. The lyrics are so sweet and moving. I think you would be hard pressed to not find it emotional or to not relate to it, after all, time moves so fast we could all do with just for five minutes in many ways with many people past and present.
Time rolls by the clock don’t stop
I wish I had a few more drops
Of the good stuff, the good times
Oh but they just keep on flying
Right on by like it ain’t nothing
Wish I had me a pause button
Moments like those Lord knows I’d hit it
And give myself five more minutes
Five More Minutes is just as good as the majority of male dominated music in the country charts, if not better. What I like about this song is the depth to the lyrics, the honesty, the despair the regret and as previously mentioned, the way it is relatable.
At eighty-six my grandpa said there’s angels in the room
All the family gathered ’round knew the time was coming soon
With so much left to say I prayed Lord I ain’t finished
Just give us five more minutes
The tune itself is catchy in a kind mid tempo way, emotive and in many ways, warm and comforting. It has that sweet souled, soothing style to its melody which is engaging, captivating and really makes you sit down and listen to the song and its lyrics intently. Scotty has a pure and natural deep baritone to his voice which is relaxing to listen to and very inviting and friendly.
I would love to see Scotty over here in the UK, he will be very much welcome and will add many new fans to his already large fan base over here. After listening to this song, I will be checking out more of his music and look forward to more new material.
