Fresh off the stage from Glastonbury, (well, about a week later), the incomparable Americana artist Our Man In The Field played BST Hyde Park as part of the line up for Neil Young. Our Man In The Field is the artist name of Alexander Ellis. A London based singer/songwriter, Our Man In The Field creates beautiful, calming, Americana music that needs to be heard word for word so the listener can invest in the characters that Ellis writes about and hopefully find comfort in their relatability.
Playing The Birdcage Stage, Our Man In The Field alongside his multi-talented band, you could argue that they had the toughest spot of the entire event. Our Man In The Field were scheduled to start just as Cat Steven’s finished and they were scheduled to finish ten minutes before Neil Young took to the stage. With many fans already in place waiting for Young, it likely did affect their numbers slightly. That being said, they did attract a decent crowd and the more they played, the more people stopped by to enjoy the set. How could you not? The amount of talent on that one small stage was mind blowing. This band were made for bigger stages and we truly believe they belonged on at least The Rainbow Stage if not The Great Oak. Playing a variety of old music and new, we got a bit of a sneak peak into what they describe as their “cowboy hip-hop” music. This is a musical direction that we are more than happy to get behind and hearing some of it live, confirms that. Sharing stories behind some of the songs such as Feel Good which is about a former friend who owed him 10k and splashed it on drugs and so on, Alex Ellis, the man behind Our Man In The Field, explains how so far, the song hasn’t made him much money so please stream it! Doin’ Alright was another great story about another friend who, after many years of addiction was finally sober. The song was met with great crowd interaction and was a highly memorable moment. The closer was a long number and for good reason. A moment to really showcase the talents of the band, the jamming session was sublime and it was really nice to see everyone on stage getting completely lost in what they were doing and felling free.
A mixture of Americana, Folk, Country, Rock and Cowboy Hip-Hop, Our Man In The Field were exceptional and you couldn’t help but pay attention to every single band member and their individual skill in every song. Alexander Ellis has a wonderful soothing vocal and their set was quite the showstopper. I feel there will be many people in that audience not just walking away as new fans, but walking away saying they were one of the highlights of the day!
