Toby Sebastian – Eyes Light Up – Album Review

In April, British Singer/songwriter and actor Toby Sebastian released his new album Eyes Light Up.

Hypnotic music from the first note, Eyes Light Up serves as somewhat of an indie movie soundtrack. I Won’t Leave You Behind feels much like a song for the road with its sense of going on a journey whether that be literally or metaphorically. The songs have incredible build up moments which are rather uplifting and inspirational just within the melodies alone. It can be difficult to be inspired by the notation of music alone without the lyrics but Sebastian achieves this with perfection. Oona for example has this wonderful ability to make you feel the music so deeply that you feel a sense of freedom. That’s the beauty of music, the feeling it invokes.

Every song on the album is a mesmerising treat with each note of each instrument playing a pivotal part. The order of the track listing has been cleverly thought out from feeling completely chilled out to slowly feeling more energised to getting up and dancing to Heaven Is The Backseat of a Rental Car.

The stripped back acoustics of Light Years holds the attention of the listener and makes you stop in your tracks to appreciate the lyrics and the emotions behind Sebastian’s vocals. His tone is a melody in itself and you believe every word he is singing.

The words of Daddy, Daddy pull at the heartstrings and again, Sebastian’s vocals are incredibly raw and powerfully emotive. The song is wonderfully chilling.

The soulful sounds of Why Did You Leave show a different side to Sebastian which proves his versatility.

Closing with Will You Be….My Wife? the track takes us back to the more mellow sounds of the album at the start. It’s the perfect close with its acoustic sounds and somewhat of a farewell melody which then take an unexpected turn to an incredible toe-tappin’ and hand clapping instrumental which makes you want to get up, dance and celebrate the album in its entirety urging you for another listen.

Co-produced with Matty Benbrook (Paolo Nutini, Dido, Jack Savoretti), Eyes Light Up plays host to a collection of 11 powerfully emotive tracks with rich sounds inspired by the 60’s and 70’s.

Eyes Light Up comes 12 years after Toby Sebastian’s debut album Into The Light. Toby has consistently been releasing singles over the years which has seen him achieve multi-million streams and support from the likes of The Times, The Sun, Metro, Rolling Stone UK, DIY, The Line Of Best Fit and more.

Toby’s acting and songwriting career have skyrocketed seamlessly in tandem since the release of his debut album and he’s found himself playing roles onscreen which have fed directly into his musical passions. He’s starred alongside Kate Nash in Coffee Wars, worked alongside the likes of The Libertines’ Carl Barat, Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz and Elvis Costello in All You Need Is Me, and portrayed Andrea Bocelli in the biopic The Music Of Silence. Toby’s major acting breakthrough came with Game Of Thrones as Trystane Martell, while he most recently starred as the lead in feature film Perfect Match as Andre Agassi. Toby is also currently writing a script for his very own TV show.
