From the very first song off of Greener you are taken through an emotional journey of words that speak to you and melodies that are instantly captivating.
Abbey Cone’s vocals have a remarkable natural storytelling quality that gain the attention of the listener drawing them into every word. Her melodic, soothing voice is believable and somewhat healing with its layers of lived experience and pain.
An artist who deserves the bigger spotlight, songs like If You Were A Song are hitmakers in the waiting. Radio friendly, this ear catching tune has a film soundtrack feel to it and is a song that will be cherished by many and it saddens me it likely won’t have the airplay that big names get especially when this song is far superior to many top charters (in our opinion).
The stunning vocals of Joy Oladokun join Cone on the track this little lighter of mine (Joy’s Version) . Collectively, their echoing harmonies blended with the hauntingly beautiful melody cast a magical spell over the listener on this clever take of the original.
Cry That It Happened is perfect in its simplicity. With so many beautiful songs being destroyed by overproduction, I am grateful Cone made the decision to keep this song untouched as it would have stripped away its raw beauty. The words perfectly capture that bittersweet feeling of moving on but occasionally revisiting both the sadness and pain of the past. The song teaches you that it’s normal to grieve old chapters, despite being happy in the present.
I Hate Springsteen sees John Osborne of Brothers Osborne deliver a masterful guitar solo which of course, he is no stranger to. The song has a clever Springsteen live show feel to it and would certainly appeal to his fans despite its contradicting title.
With our early favourites mentioned, we will likely change our minds upon each revisit of the album.
Cone has crafted this album spectacularly well. The track listing interlaces beautifully with each song feeling like an episode in a series that leaves you eager for the next chapter.
Greener is a delightfully mesmerising masterpiece that needs to be heard in its entirety. The album takes you away from the real world for a moment and makes you feel peaceful yet emotional in so many different ways.
An album that is fairly short with its nine tracks, Greener makes the listener want to keep the album on replay and we will certainly be doing that.
