Catherine McGrath – Review

Catherine McGrath is a great representation for UK country music. Signed to Warner Bros Records UK, Catherine is really starting to make a name for herself within the UK country music scene and has been keeping herself incredibly busy. Securing support slots with the wonderful Una Healy, the much loved duo The Shires and US rising superstar Kelsea Ballerini, Catherine has been receiving much loved praise from country fans everywhere.

Catherine released her debut EP One last year and it gained raving reviews from various publications. Her sweet-sounding voice and relatable story-telling lyrics catapulted her career and even fellow country singers were championing her music.

Laura Oakes, fellow UK country artists said of Catherine – “Catherine McGrath is amazing; her EP One, I have played over and over again”

Catherine returned with new music last month by releasing the songs Starting From Now, When I’m Older and Just In Case.

These new songs deliver a more mature and fuller sound than her last EP.

Starting From Now is a ready made hit with it’s country pop vibe and infectious melody and chorus. It has en element of Taylor Swift but also she sounds much like a female Ed Sheeran which isn’t exactly a bad thing. The hand clapping beat gets you doing exactly that, hand clapping as well as toe tapping. It is a feel good song with inspirational lyrics and an upbeat vibe. This song has the potential to be successful in the mainstream charts and in my opinion certainly has a place on mainstream radio and is a song that could easily do well in the US market.

When I’m Older – I love this song. It is everything that I love about country pop music. It has a motivational melody that makes you want to get up and enjoy the day to the absolute best. I can imagine this song being featured in a hit movie too. I would love to hear this song live acoustically as I think it will be stunning.

Just In Case – a very country sounding song and a rather anthemic song with a jumping around, bouncy styled melody. It isn’t as mature or full filling as the other two tracks in my opinion but is still a great fun-lovin, upbeat track which is very catchy. I just feel the other two songs have a lot more to them.

Catherine is a very talented song writer especially for someone so young. She certainly has the ability to be the UK’s answer to Taylor Swift and I for one am excited to see how far her career will go. As she is so young she has so much time ahead of her to get to the point of stardom that Taylor has.

Catherine is one to watch and has a lot more music to be released so watch this space. You can also catch Catherine on tour with Una Healy, Kelsea Ballerini amongst others who I will list below. Grab your chance to see her in a more intimate setting before she starts selling out her own shows.
