UK Soul/Jazz singer/songwriter Mica Millar (pronounced Meeka) was one of the highlights of the entire BST Hyde Park season for us this year. A soulful, Jazzy toned voice that you will fall in love with from the very first note, Mica’s music is deniably brilliant and as the sole songwriter on the majority, if not all her music, Millar is well on her way to becoming a global superstar.
Mica Millar released her debut album Heaven Knows in 2022 and has been touring the album extensively since. A phenomenal debut, she is working on her second album and whilst it may seem like a big gap between albums, I feel it is sometimes the best decision as ensures fans truly get to know the music the way it deserves to be known.
Playing on the Birdcage stage, she started her BST set with her song Girl (which is also the first track off her album) – Millar’s crowd was so large, it was actually the first time I couldn’t get near the front of the Birdcage Stage. More Than You Give Me was next. A jazz infused soul song with an edge of R&B, it is one of those songs that will stand the test of time. The right kind of catchy, the self- penned song is Grammy worthy. In fact, the majority of Heaven Knows has Grammy appeal and with Mica now being part of the Grammy’s Member Class, this means she will be eligible for nomination with her second album, so let’s hope it happens.
Speaking of the new album, Mica played the song When You’re Gone which is to be on the new album. The song was originally written for Heaven Knows but she was unhappy with its original form so the song never made that album. It has, however, been on her set list for a number of years.
A generous set list of some of her finest tracks, we were treated with No Money Nor Faith (Freedom), Preacher Man, Trouble, Heaven Knows and Will I See You Again. Mica Millar and her band gave a masterclass set and more than proved why they were invited to support Stevie Wonder at BST Hyde Park. A natural on stage, Millar has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever had the privilege to hear live. A soulful, sassy, fun and upbeat performance, Mica’s energy is infectious and her witty, laid back personality will only heighten the fans love for her.
