Mackenzie Carpenter – Hey Country Queen – Album Review

Mackenzie Carpenter makes her full-length debut with Hey Country Queen, out now via The Valory Music Co. Featuring 13 tracks that have all been co-written by Carpenter, this album, in its entirety, will leave you laughing, crying, dancing and screaming along from the top of your lungs.

An album that starts with the sassy and relatable Dozen Red Flags, the song immediately reels you in making you want to hear more.

Things get a bit more country and rock and roll styled for the fun and uplifting Boots On which will get you dancing around the living room in no time. Slowing things down for Only Girl, the track showcases Carpenter’s gorgeous tone and her natural ability to tell an emotional story!

Carpenter teams up with fellow label mates Midland for I Wish You Would. If you love traditional country then this song is definitely for you. It holds somewhat of a tribute to Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers in its sound whether that be intentional or not but with the popularity of Riley Green and Ella Langley’s traditional sounding duets, there is definitely a market for these type of songs in country music – people have definitely been missing them so we are 100 per cent here for this song!

Don’t Mess With Exes with its rhythmic beat and melody remains in-keeping with the neo- traditional styles of country music which really helps this album shine!

Gone Fishing delivers a laid back, guilty pleasure vibe and is a song that will likely be a favourite in a live setting.

Red Wine Blue is a mid-tempo ballad with a beautiful riff in Carpenter’s vocals. Her somber tone brings on a lot of emotion for the listener. Wonderfully produced, it’s an unskipable song.

The stunning Jesus I’m Jealous is the ballad we have all been craving for so long. Powerfully emotive, it’s a goosebump track.

Back to beats with Sound of a Heartbreak, you will find yourself wanting to chant along loudly with this song.

Cowgirl Like Me has a bro-country kind of Florida Georgia Line feel to it but blended with a dark rock country vibe.

Guys Like You, another lovely ballad that will make the listener be really attentive to every aspect of the song. Instrumentally delightful, it’s another chills moment.

The Other Side with its guitar picking intro is perfect in its simplicity. The most stripped back song on the album, it gives the listener the opportunity to really appreciate Mackenzie Carpenter’s overall talent. It’s a heartbreaking song that is unfortunately really easy to resonate with.

Ending well with the track Country Queen, the song is such a perfect close that it leaves you wanting to hear the album again and again.

Hey Country Queen is addictive from start to finish and delivers the true essence of neo-traditional country music! Not a track out of place, this carefully thought out project is easily one of the best albums released this year within the country music genre. Carpenter’s rock styled vocals are inviting, intriguing and an absolute delight to listen to. An artist for fans of Miranda Lambert, Traditional country and rock country, Hey Country Queen brings so much to the table with relatable lyrics, sass, humour, tears and infectious tunes. We are undoubtedly going to be hearing so much more from Mackenzie Carpenter for years to come.

ABOUT MACKENZIE CARPENTER: Hailing from the small town of Hull, GA, Mackenzie Carpenter is the spunky blonde girl-next-door who fell in love with music as a kid, writing alongside her brothers and singing in church. Years later, the charming singer-songwriter has used her pure, classic Country voice to write and sing her truth, armed with an undeniable knack for penning songs that deeply resonate with listeners time and time again. With an upbringing consisting of a rowdy support system, back porch hootenannies and juicy drama, the warm and authentic Carpenter also embraces the crazy and sometimes humorous aspects that make life more interesting. She kickstarted her career as a songwriter for Lily Rose’s 2021 No. 1 hit “Villain,” and has since co-written songs including Top 15 single “I’m Not Pretty” and new fan-favorite tracks “Indifferent” and “28th of June” with breakout star Megan Moroney all while starting her own career as an artist. Since signing her record de=al with The Valory Music Co. in 2022, Mackenzie has been named to MusicRow Magazine’s ‘Next Big Thing’ Artists Class Of 2025, Spotify’s Hot Country 2024 Artists To Watch, CMT’s Next Women of Country class of 2023 and Nashville Briefing’s Artists To Watch 2023. She has opened for talents like Miranda Lambert, Megan Moroney, Jake Owen, Parker McCollum, Craig Campbell and Ryan Hurd. Last year, the young star released the “cathartic and empowering” (All Country News) track “Sound Of A Heartbreak,” “Only Girl,” which “feels destined to be a wedding dance staple” (Billboard), and “irresistibly catchy” (Holler) “Boots On.” Her highly anticipated debut album, HEY COUNTRY QUEEN, is set for March 7 and will give fans a deeper view of her multi-dimensional talents while paying homage to the beloved Country Queens that paved the way for her to speak her mind, write her truth and have some fun along the way.
