Global superstar and GRAMMY, CMA, ACM Award-winning singer/songwriter Carly Pearce releases her eagerly awaited fourth studio album hummingbird via Big Machine Records. Pearce has always stayed true to the traditional side of country music but with hummingbird, she dives more into the soul of country music.

Her most personal album yet, Pearce’s storytelling is wonderfully relatable with its with honesty taking us on a journey of her personal growth after loss and heartbreak.

Listen to the 14-track album HERE which marks Pearce’s debut as a co-producer alongside frequent collaborators Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne.

“hummingbird is a deeply personal journey filled with heart, soul, and a good dose of humor,” says Pearce. “The process of creating this album was me reconstructing the way I see love and the way I see myself. From facing heartbreak, falling in love again, and gaining confidence, I’ve learned to embrace every part of my story. I hope this record resonates with anyone on a healing journey, showing that through vulnerability, self-discovery, and therapy, things can truly get better. It’s okay not to have everything figured out; happiness can be found in the process. I hope hummingbird resonates with everyone who listens and inspires you to find strength in your own journey.”

We caught up with Carly Pearce to discuss the album!

Enjoy!

Are you all ready for Hummimgbird?

I am so ready for Hummingbird yes!

I know you get excited per album but does it feel different each release?

Yeah for each album I think I am in a different place in my life and I think for this one it’s been almost three years since I put out an album so there is just so much excitement and I have been working hard and am so proud.

What I love about this album is its strong elements of traditional country! From start to finish! We don’t get that much any more!

Well that makes me happy, I am glad that’s how you feel! I have definitely tried to go even deeper into that side of me in this album!

It’s actually one of those rare albums where even on the first listen I am like “this is my favourite, no wait this is my favourite, no THIS is my favourite”.

I love that! That’s awesome!

One of the things I wanted to ask about the album is how do you decide on the book ends of an album? Is it really important for you to have a big impact on the start and at the end?

Actually yes it is! I don’t try to go in and say “oh I’m going to write this as the starter” but on this album, naturally, ‘Country Made Me Do It’ even sonically starts with that fiddle and then at the end of the album ‘hummingbird’ starts with the fiddle and that’s very very intentional. Those two songs definitely felt like the beginning of the chapter and the end of it.

What was your best memory of making the album?

Oh just being in the studio and getting to hear the songs come to life, that is always my favourite part. The tracking days with the band and I get to hear these demos and guitar and vocals come to life.

Were there any songs that sound completely different from the writers room to full production to the point where you were like “wow, I didn’t know it could sound like that?”

That’s a great question! They all sound a little different! I would say Oklahoma took on a much bigger sonic sound that I love so much and Truck on Fire, I always knew that one was going to be good but I feel like the cut of it is really really good.

One song that I am loving is Rock, Paper, Scissors. That is such a great title and I wanted to know who came up with that one?

Nicolle Galyon, I am not even going to act like that was me. She came to me and she said “I have an idea for you and if we don’t get it right, we are going to have to write it again.” I have never had anybody say that but now I know why she said that because it was such a good idea. We wrote it in like 30 minutes, it happened so fast. It was one of those things where I was like “why didn’t I think of that?”

Which idea or start of a song was brought to the writers room where you were like “Yes I need this on the album” before it’s even properly begun? Obviously we just spoke about Rock, Paper, Scissors

The hook on I may be in Oklahoma, but I’m not OK

That is such a clever line.

Do you have any songs that you have written that you love but are struggling to finish but want to go back and explore it for a future project?

I feel like I write exactly what is going on in my life at the time. I have one song that we wrote during the 29 album that didn’t feel right for 29 and we actually cut it for hummingbird and it still didn’t work so we scrapped it!

I hope we get it one way or another?

I don’t know, maybe I will release it just for fun

I hope so! Who do you play your new songs to? Who is your go to person to get an honest opinion?

I play them for the key people in the team and for my band because I feel like they will be brutally honest with me. I also play them for my parents, they are very honest!

Do your dogs respond to your music? It’s probably a daft question but do dogs pay attention to music at all?

They do! They love it, they love music!

I wanted to talk about, although it’s a while now, about when you posted your first industry showcase poster. What was that time like for you compared to how it is now?

Those early years I was cleaning air b&b’s, I was working at the mall and trying to write songs at any point that I could, playing any kind of showcase, playing any kind of writers round, sending emails to any human that would listen. It was a hustle for sure but it makes it all sweeter and I look at that from 2010 or something and think “wow” this was my life long dream!

Do you have any fans that were at that showcase? or shows the same era?

Yes! At a show this past weekend somebody said they first saw me play in 2010.

You have such a great relationship with the UK and you are coming back next year! From your first experience to now having a sell out tour almost already, you must have so many good memories?

Yes! This past C2C Festival was the craziest thing I have ever experienced. I think y’all just buy into albums and I am an album artist so I am just really excited to come back and play this album.

Most people at that C2C said you should have been the headliner

I heard that haha, it’s very nice!

What can we expect from your return? Obviously Hummingbird!

Yeah and just being able to cultivate my own show! Now seeing the response that we have seen over there I think that I have a responsibility to make sure that I live up to the hype if you will?

Oh you will and we can’t wait! Thanks for talking today and see you soon!
