Angel White – Ghost of The West: Volume 1 – Album Review

Fifth-generation Texas native and country singer-songwriter Angel White’s debut release GHOST OF THE WEST: VOLUME I is out now. The 6-song (plus an interlude) release is inspired by the wide-open spaces of his hometown of Cleburne, TX, where his roots run deep with a family lineage of cowboys and century-old tradition of raising horses. White describes the release as “An ode to the forgotten, a message to the lost, a light in the dark, the ghost of the west.”

Angel White is one of those rare artists that has a unique voice which instantly captivates its listener. A western soul, White’s music is timeless and blends genres such as Country, Americana, Rock, Blues and Soul whilst also showcasing his Texan roots.

The album starts with Outlaw which is an infectious bluesy song with a cool groove and a wicked slide guitar segment towards the end. Outlaw is a very cleverly written song that seems simple yet gives so much! The vocals, the guitar, the words deliver a stellar track that shows a glimpse of not only what a masterpiece the rest of Ghost of The West is going to be, but of what a bright future Angel White has.

If You’re Gonna Leave has more of a country feel to it. A lovely catchy chorus, it’s probably the most mainstream sounding song off of the record but is just as exceptional as the rest of the track listing!

Red Blanket is an emotional dark Americana song about the loss of White’s Grandmother and how he still keeps the Red Blanket she gave to him as a child. Soul-stirring vocals, the song is mesmerising in its melancholic, western cinematic blues melody.

An interlude comes from Call Your Grandma which is a voicemail. It’s sweet and reminds us we should be calling up our grandparents if we are still lucky enough to have them!

Villain is a track that is musically generous. Another catchy tune, Villain is one of those songs that can be formatted to suit anyone’s narrative. It can be seen as a song about overthinking and being your own worst enemy or about another person! That’s part of the beauty of song lyric such as these.

2733 is the current single off of the album. A more country sounding song, 2733 is one of the best songs of the album and is instantly memorable. It’s one of those strong songs that would easily suit mainstream radio. The chorus is upbeat and great to sing a long to! This will easily be a fan favourite and hopefully a song that will bring in a big audience to White’s music. A wonderful use of instrumentation, this song needs to be played everywhere.

Long Way Up delivers a heavy rock edge to the close of the album! Electric blues, Jazzy and rhythmic, the song is hard-hitting, raw and edgy. White can produce music in any genre and pull it off. A brilliant end to an album full of textures.

A rootsy, cinematic soundtrack that flows beautifully, Ghost of The West is sonically, lyrically and vocally an absolute masterpiece. An incredibly gripping album from start to finish, each song keeps you absorbed in its story telling lyrics, soulful melodies and White’s gritty, authentic and passionate vocals.
