Cash and Carter – No Use Praying – EP Review

Cash & Carter are made up of Birmingham based songwriter Shaun Smith (aka Stealth) and successful London singer, writer and producer Ross O’Reilly. Successful in their own right over the years, they decided to come together to create Cash & Carter.

Inspired by iconic acts such as The Eagles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steve Miller Band, Crosby Stills & Nash, and of course the legendary Johnny Cash and June Carter, Cash & Carter offer a refreshing and honest take on the genre.

The EP was an instant hit for us. It’s so wonderful when that happens. The level of professionalism across this EP is second to none. A combination of the best parts of folk and country music, the EP has the potential to reach great heights. There isn’t a song that doesn’t have ‘lead single’ status.

Starting with the track No Use Praying, the song is a powerful, anthemic, radio friendly and very catchy song. If this song was played across country radio in the US right now, you wouldn’t know they were a brand new UK country music duo. That’s what in part also makes this EP special though – it bridges the gap between UK and US country music. It’s a song that you can easily hear big names such as Jordan Davis releasing.

Americana (Letting Her Go) is a stunning and highly emotive track about the loss of a close friend. You can feel the heartbreak of loss in every note and vocal. The simplicity in the song is absolute perfection, making it really powerful. The way it ends as it started is impactful and beautifully done!

All Of The Way brings us back to a more upbeat sound. The energy of the track delivered by the beat, vocals and claps is really effective. It’s a song that causes you to get up and join in. This song live would be phenomenal and a real crowd pleaser with many potential crowd interactive moments. It has a strong live arena feel to it and is simply just good fun!

Ballad of Talulah has a great blend of country and Americana. Cash and Carter have a wonderful way of writing lyrics that are really captivating and Ballad of Talulah is a great example of that as it makes you really want to listen to every word.

Closing with the fantastic cover of The Cure’s Just Like Heaven – what Cash and Carter have done with this cover is just sensational. The cover is very different with a much more sombre, melancholic edge to it. It’s very hypnotic with a country/Americana twist that sparks a dark western cinematic vibe.

Well written, fantastically produced and beautifully sung, No Use Praying is an EP that is epically brilliant and well worth a listen to fans of any genre.
