The new Urban Voodoo Machine’s Friends and Family album is not The Urban Voodoo Machine. But that’s the point, this exhilarating album consists of the band’s musical friends performing 15 classic UVM tracks. Friends and Family (Volume One) contains the bonus of UVM reworking two of their tracks with special guests.
Friends and Family captures The Urban Voodoo Machine’s spirit and energy. The album is aptly named as the UVM is one big, inclusive, flexible musical family – with a lot of friends!
This is a “must have” album for all fans of the group, with some great new interpretations of familiar tracks. It also may serve as a good introduction to the band’s music for fans of the artists performing on the album.
Tracks include Voodoo classics such as Orphan’s Lament, Help Me Jesus, High Jeopardy Thing, Cheers For the Tears and Goodbye To Another Year.
Artists on the album include Jim Jones, The Future Shape Of Sound, TV Smith, Vic Ruggiero, Ledfoot, Big Boy Bloater and Wilko Johnson.
The two new UVM bonus recordings are Heroin (Put My Brothers In The Ground) featuring a blistering guitar solo by Wilko Johnson and Dirty Water featuring The Inmates’ Peter Gunn & Tony Oliver.
BOON first listen verdict: A cracking album. Spot on.
