So…we need to talk about Maren Morris.
Maren Morris is one of country music’s finest and most current artists and is someone who is more than just an artist. Maren is an icon in music and fashion and isn’t just important to the country music scene but to the music industry in general. Her songwriting is exceptional, intelligent and artistic making her an instantly relatable artist and a very important role model.
Having worked hard as a songwriter for many years, Maren released three studio albums by independent labels before releasing her critically acclaimed album Hero with Columbia Nashville in 2015 following a highly successful EP and hit single My Church.
So what is so great about Maren? Well….pretty much everything really. Maren is one artist that could bridge the gap between country and mainstream music and she deserves to be one of the worlds biggest, most successful artists, hopefully that will become a reality soon.
If there is one country artist that should be able to follow the mainstream success of Taylor Swift then it is Maren Morris. Maren’s rich, soulful and sassy edge and her pop, R&B infused music could easily receive global success in the all genre charts. Everyone I have played her to who are not fans of country music say, “well why is she not repeatedly played on Radio 1?” My answer? No idea – but they would be very privileged to play her and undoubtedly, Maren would then see a number one album in the UK.
Maren is a force to be reckoned with – her strong attitude and craft is to be admired and her ability to wow an audience in a live setting is second to none. She is a little firecracker, her on stage persona and performance skills are off the scale and her voice is exceptional, vibrant and unique.
Maren makes country cool, I am proud to have her representing such a misrepresented genre. My Church completely shook the country verse in the best kind of way, showing how powerful women in country music truly are and proving that they should be played on country radio. Other songs such as 80’s Mercedes show a sassier side to her music and if people weren’t so afraid of that word Country then she would no doubt be competing alongside artists such as Rihanna as 80’s Mercedes is a song I can personally see being sung by artists such as her.
Maren has written for other artists in the past including Second Wind for Kelly Clarkson and thankfully recorded her own, original version on her album Hero.
Each song off her album Hero is kick ass with first class lyrics and cool, catchy melodies. Her breathtaking ballads such as I Could Use A Love Song show a softer and more emotional side to her but it is songs like Rich and Sugar where her slick, sassy, soulful and dominating side are shown.
Favourites of mine include Drunk Girls Don’t Cry and Company You Keep. Company You Keep was originally from the EP and is now on the deluxe version of Hero. Those songs have a wickedly cool vibe with a fresh new sound that is very current.
As I mentioned before, Maren is a genre in herself pulling in elements of country, pop, R & B and Blues. Once is a very strong Bluesy track with a melody so infectious within its instruments that it stands out tall.
There isn’t really anyone out there quite like Maren which is exciting. Maren blew the C2C Festival audiences away just by performing three songs on the Yamaha stage inside the O2 Arena and made such an impact that not only did she return to C2C the following year but she secured a spot on the main stage and deservedly so.
Maren recently released a very moving song in honour of the Las Vegas victims at Route 91 Festival titled Dear Hate with whom she co wrote with Vince Gill who is also featured on the track – the proceeds of the song are to benefit Music City Cares Fund for Las Vegas shooting victims. Maren wrote in her Instagram post when debuting Dear Hate “Hate is everywhere, and I’m sick of not doing enough. In the darkest tunnel, there is still love & music. That’s what it’s here for. Here is Dear Hate. Any cent I see from this I’m donating to the Music City Cares Fund.”

This month Maren returns to the UK with her fiancee Ryan Hurd. The pair will be playing various outlets across the UK and we hope that this is the first of many headline tours here.
If you haven’t yet checked out Maren Morris then you absolutely must. She is almost a genre within herself and raises the bar really high and in my opinion, is far better than anyone in the all genre charts, if only they will give her a chance. Hopefully Maren’s tour with One Direction’s Niall Horan will open up more doors to her music and help her gain more fans, respect, media attention and overall success. If her performance with him on the CMA Awards performing I Could Use A Love Song/ Seeing Blind is anything to go by, then the world should already be catching on.
