Dan Owen – Open Hands and Enemies – EP- Review

imageDan Owen has a talent that deserves a lot of recognition and is an artist that should not be ignored or overlooked. A singer/songwriter who clearly pours his heart and soul into his art, Dan creates music that is soulful, tuneful and beautifully heart breaking.

Dan tends to carry a lot of emotion in his music both vocally and sonically and it translates remarkably well in his lyrics which are poetic and heart wrenching. His melodies all seem to develop a haunting and bewitching sound throughout which is infectious and exciting to listen to. He has such a strong voice that is gravelly and soulful with so much emotion that can only come from real life experience as is something that cannot be taught.

Made To Love You – was the first single off the EP which Dan also made a very powerful video to showcasing domestic violence. The melody is simple yet stunning with a slow tempo which sends chills down your spine. The piano throughout gives the song a slight haunting and melancholic feel and the way Dan sings with such powerful emotion, you feel the pain in every word. I love the bridge and the chorus especially.

Dan’s voice is particularly very strong and powerful in the song The Witching Hour especially during the chorus. His tone holds a slight angry vibe which escalates as the song progresses. The melody has a nice repetitive sound with great guitar and piano use.

Moonlight – a lovely ballad with a dream like melody in a sleepy kind of way which makes you close your eyes and really listen to the song. Dan’s voice takes a higher tone during this song which shows he has a wide vocal range.

Closer ( Home Recording ) – another nice track with a simple yet effective melody. This track has a great catchy chorus and bridge and in no means an annoying way. A wonderful memorable track with the same emotional appeal as the rest of the EP.

Dan’s EP – Open Hands and Enemies is available to download now and I recommend that you do. It went straight in at No.1 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart, and entered the Top 40 of the iTunes Album Chart.
