Campbell/Jensen – Live at St Pancras Church – Review

By Grace Brennan Derbyshire

On Monday evening, Campbell/Jensen, a duo consisting of Ashley Campbell and Thor Jensen, took the stage at St Pancras Church in London. The performance was special for the American-formed duo, who have recently relocated to London.

They work to combine both of their distinct musical backgrounds and form a unique sound that can’t be described by one genre. Campbell has a rich history in the genres of country and Americana, being the daughter of country legend Glen Campbell and launching her music career playing in his band. Meanwhile, Jensen has a background in gypsy rock and jazz and is well-known in New York’s jazz scene.

For their first show as London locals, Campbell/Jensen brought an enthusiastic crowd that will surely continue to grow in the years to come. Throughout the night, they showcased the songs on their debut album, Turtle Cottage which was recently released. They kicked off their night with their single P&P highlighting their talent for storytelling through lyrics and fondness for sharing enchanting acoustic love songs.

Other songs the two played included their soul-filled song A Song By Vampires, For Vampires, which is about eternal love. The theme continued as they sang their whimsical tracks If I’m Gonna Live a Long Time and Run With You.

However, they changed into a more somber tone when they sang the songs Exit Zero, a solely complex instrumental track that was written after the two drove by an exit 0 on a road trip, and Goodbye Cowboy, which is the duo’s most obvious breakup song. Before the night came to a close, the duo played their upbeat and fun-lyrics Tank And Babe. The song further showcases their quick-witted songwriting and fun-loving storytelling, making the crowd laugh in the choruses.

Their voices, with Campbell’s being high and clear and Thor possessing a deep vocal range, complement each other throughout each track. The two have an obvious chemistry, easily making each other and the crowd laugh. They can comfortably share the stage and bring out the best in each other’s diverse talent sets. Campell effortlessly switched between playing the guitar and the banjo, while Thor would often break into guitar solos with Campbell smiling the entire time.

Campbell/Jensen are continuing to tour throughout the UK and Ireland until February 2024. Tour dates, along with how to purchase tickets. can be found on their website.
