Calgary Stampede, Canada – Megan Moroney – Live Review

With temperatures reaching 35 degrees across Calgary, the last place anyone wanted to be on Tuesday night was in the middle of a crowd with their cowboy hat stuck to their sweaty head and their boots giving them heat rash.

Unless, of course, Megan Moroney is playing.

Nashville North was the busiest it had been for the whole of Stampede, with entry halted due to capacity, bar queues merging into the crowd, and a sea of cowboy hats as far as the eye could see.

Ahead of her ‘Am I Okay?’ album release date (12th July), Moroney opened the show with ‘Another On The Way’, wearing her signature blue coloured jumpsuit – she invented blue – silver sparkly cowboy boots to match her sparkly silver guitar and mic stand, and her classic ‘noodle’ hair.

Her fans were already loud and proud and ready for her next song as she played the unmistakable opening riffs. “I wrote this song about my ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend,” she said as she introduced the hit, ‘I’m Not Pretty’.

Regardless of whether it was one of her oldest, like ‘Hair Salon’ from her first EP, ‘Pistol made of Roses,’ or one of her newest, like ‘Indifferent,’ everyone was shouting her lyrics back to her and trying to edge ever closer to the front to soak up some of the Moroney Magic.

Timed perfectly with the nightly Stampede fireworks display, Moroney sang ‘Man on the Moon’. “I didn’t do that on purpose,” she laughed as the sky lit up during the song.

Other hits of the night included ‘Fix You Too’ where Moroney mentioned her friend Kameron Marlowe and how she prefers their joint version (the original is from her first EP), as well as ‘Sleep on My Side,’ and ‘Georgia Girl’.

Rounding off her set with Tennessee Orange, the stage was flooded with the title colour and fans maxed out their own lung capacities belting it out with her. The song has surpassed 240 million streams on Spotify and was responsible for catapulting Moroney into everyone’s playlists and giving her the platform she has now. Everyone knew every word.

Closing her set with ‘Lucky’, the titular track just days before her new album releases, it felt like Moroney was giving a nod to her debut album and closing that chapter. “Are you guys ready to feel lucky?” she said as she began the final song of the night.

Moroney’s show was non-stop and although only 50 minutes, she packed in an abundance of talent, energy and lyrical prowess. The tinge of rasp and Georgia drawl add into her likeability, as well as the way she interacts with her band and the crowd. For everyone there, it was a show to remember.
